Troubleshooting Common DTF Problems: Why Is My Transfer Peeling?

You followed the instructions, pressed the shirt, and peeled the film... but the design didn't stick. Or maybe it looked great, but cracked after one wash. DTF is a magical technology, but it's also a science. When things go wrong, it's usually due to one of three variables: Time, Temperature, or Pressure. Let's diagnose and fix your print problems.

🛑 Problem #1: The Transfer Isn't Sticking (Lifting)

The Symptom: When you try to peel the film, the ink stays on the film instead of sticking to the shirt.

Likely Causes & Fixes:

  • Insufficient Pressure (Most Common): DTF requires HEAVY pressure (60 PSI or "two-handed" clamp force). If your heat press is too loose, the adhesive won't fuse. Fix: Tighten your pressure knob until it's barely closeable.
  • Cold Spots: Cheap heat presses often have uneven heating. Fix: Pre-press the garment to warm it up, and use a heat gun to verify your platen's actual temperature.
  • Peeling Too Soon: If you are using "Cold Peel" transfers (like ours), you MUST wait until it is completely cool to the touch. Fix: Use a cooling block or wave the shirt for 30 seconds before peeling.

🎨 Problem #2: Colors Look Dull or Wrong

The Symptom: The print looks vibrant on screen but muddy or dark on the shirt.

The Fix: This is almost always a file issue.

  • RGB vs. CMYK: Screens use light (RGB) to make neon brights. Ink uses pigment (CMYK). If you design in RGB, the printer will "guess" the closest CMYK match, often making it muddy. Always design in CMYK.
  • Garment Moisture: Moisture in the fabric can steam up during pressing, interfering with the ink. Always pre-press your garment for 5-10 seconds to remove moisture before applying the transfer.

🕸️ Problem #3: White Outline or "Halo"

The Symptom: A thin, fuzzy white line surrounds your design elements.

The Fix: Check your artwork transparency. As discussed in our Artwork Guide, semi-transparent pixels (soft edges, shadows, glows) confuse the printer. The printer puts white ink under any pixel it sees. Ensure your edges are 100% hard and crisp.

💔 Problem #4: Cracking After Wash

The Symptom: The print looks like dried mud or spiderwebs after a laundry cycle.

The Cause: Under-Curing

The adhesive powder didn't melt enough to bond into the fabric fibers. It's sitting on top like a sticker instead of fusing with the shirt.

The Solution: Second Press

NEVER skip the second press. After peeling the film, cover the design with parchment paper (or Teflon) and press again for 10-15 seconds. This pushes the ink deep into the fabric and seals the deal.

🧪 The Golden Rule of Heat Pressing

If you take nothing else from this guide, remember the "3 Ps":

🔥

Pre-Press

Remove moisture (5-10 sec).

🏋️

Pressure

Heavy pressure (60 PSI).

❄️

Peel Cold

Wait until completely cool.
